Jose Canseco, who made the most of his time on the basepath and in the batter's box during his Major League Baseball career, didn't even show up Wednesday — and it cost him more than $7,000.
A district judge in Marple, Pa., on Wednesday ruled against Canseco in a breach-of-contract suit after the former Oakland Athletics star failed to appear in court. The judgment was for a little more than $7,600, according to attorney Bob Bush.
Bush represented Damon Feldman, a celebrity boxing promoter who lives in Broomall, Pa. Feldman filed suit after he said he caught Canseco trying to pull the old switcheroo for a March 26 boxing match in Hollywood, Fla.
Instead of fighting Billy Padden, Canseco sent his twin brother, Ozzie. Ozzie Canseco ended up being escorted out of the Passions Nightclub in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino by the Seminole Hard Rock security.
Feldman isn't sure he'll ever see his award, though.
"I beat him, and it's all great," Feldman said of the court judgment, "but now I have to figure out how I'm going to get the money."
Added Feldman: "I'm really looking into going after Ozzie with this, as well."
Feldman strongly suspects the Cansecos pulled a similar switcheroo for a Jan. 24, 2009, boxing match in Aston, Pa. Jose Canseco was scheduled to fight former actor Danny Bonaduce.
But it's unclear whom Bonaduce fought. The Canseco who stepped into the ring was wearing a body suit/shirt that made it appear he had tattoos all over his upper body. The fight ended in a draw.
"Right now I'm about 95 percent sure it was Ozzie," Feldman said.
Feldman said he will consult with his attorney about whether to pursue legal action over that incident. Feldman said his father backed him financially for that fight, putting up $50,000.
"Guys like this can't take advantage of people like this," Feldman said of the Cansecos. "It's just not right."
